Vandalism at the park

May 26, 2008 / by danimac

As I was driving home from work yesterday morning (6am), I noticed some mud and grass in the highway near the park.  As I got closer I could see that someone had driven off of the highway, made a nearly perfect circle around our flag pole, and proceeded right back onto the highway.  I called work to see if anyone had reported this yet and I was told by my co-worker that she noticed it on her way to work but figured there was nothing that could be done about it.  I figure she's probably right.  Whoever did it had their fun and merriment and will get away with it - I am sure.

But, did you know that a couple of weeks ago one juvenile was caught vandalizing park equipment red handed?  Not by an officer, but by a gentleman who lives near the park.  I am sure some have heard the rumors that have flown since then, but I really hate to think that our society has come to the point where a man is arrested for trying to prevent a wrong.  This juvenile wouldn't tell the man his name and told him there was nothing he could do about the damage the juvenile had already done.  So the man escorted the juvenile to the local gas station right across the street and called the law.  The juveniles mom is pressing charges against the good samaritan.  I hope the city will press charges against the juvenile.  There are people out there in and around our small town who have worked hard to improve the park and make it a fun and safe place for families to take their children to play and it is really sad that when someone tries to stop a child from damaging that property and hard work they are arrested.  I hope that all goes well for the man who refused to let a smart ass little boy get the better of him and I hope the city makes that boy pay for every cent of damage he caused.

And I hope that whoever tore up the yard Saturday night never has to fix the ruts left in their own front yard by a bunch of kids just out having a good time.

He should be covered under the good smaritan law...(i need to learn how to spell)...and a citizen CAN make a "citizen's arrest"...juv laws are a pain however...

I would of done the same thing...most probley...stayed with the child, till PD arrived...or followed the little turd home if I didn't know who he was...unlawful restraint falls into play in a little way...again, due to him being a juv..there's a lot of gray area.

I hated to see the park torn up too...with any luck...the "idiot" will start to brag and it will leak out who done it...then PD has only to haul him in for questioning...and a deal struck with the person who told the PD who to go after.

I've seen times when an officer had to go through 8 kids to get to the one that heard it firsthand...but it's worth it.

    -good grief

Your hands tied up?  Sock in the mouth?  Just between a rock and a hard place?  I'm just teasing, guess we'll hear from ya in a while.
